Blepharitis is a condition that causes your eyelids to become inflamed, usually due to clogged oil glands at the base of your eyelashes. It can be triggered by several things, but the result is a swollen, uncomfortable eyelid. Other symptoms of blepharitis include:

  • Redness around your eyes
  • Eyes that feel watery
  • Light sensitivity
  • Flakey or crusted skin around your eye
  • Itching
  • Burning feeling in your eye
  • The sensation of something in your eye
  • Greasy-looking eyelids

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, first try cleaning the area. Keep it clean and dry for a few days to see if your condition improves. If it doesn’t improve, visit the office of Scott S. Weissman, MD, to get to the bottom of what’s causing your uncomfortable symptoms.

What causes blepharitis?

Blepharitis most commonly affects people with excess bacteria at the base of their eyelashes. Other things can also contribute to the development of blepharitis, including:

  • Allergy to eye makeup, medications, or contact lens solution
  • Infection
  • Scalp or eyebrow dandruff
  • Problems with the oil glands on your eye
  • Rosacea
  • Eyelash lice or mites

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important that you make an appointment with Dr. Weissman. Blepharitis, if left untreated, can lead to complications like sties, the loss of eyelashes, recurring pink eye, and corneal injury. For effective treatment to resolve your blepharitis and protect your eye health, make an appointment with Dr. Weissman.
